Astaro Mail Archiving

2010-12-03_1239Mailbox servers often suffer from the heavy load of growing email traffic and administrators struggle with mailbox quotas and user storage demands. Through the Astaro Mail Archiving Service, you can free up valuable server resources and get control of compliance requirements while improving productivity of end-users at the same time. All of this is provided as a reliable hosted service with no need for additional hardware or software. Learn more about the individual features which make up the Mail Archiving service.

Enforce requirements from local laws and regulations.

Where email audits are necessary, discovery tasks can be fulfilled with special auditor privileges within the archive, following a four-eye principle to comply with data protection requirements.

2010-12-03_1253Modern industrial and governmental rules and regulations make email archiving an obligation for all businesses. Emails must be archived for a certain period of time and in the case of audits, specific information must be presented within due time.

The Astaro Mail Archiving Service gives enables you to offload emails from your messaging servers and provides end users with a stunning discovery experience. The archive also offers granular control over retention periods, so that you can set individual periods per mailbox or even filter for specific content or exclude certain emails from being archived at all.

While these easy-to-enforce retention policies can be configured within the graphical interface of the ArchiveManager, the even more important question is how you will rapidly find and produce important emails when required. Users with special auditor privileges – optionally based on a four-eye principle – can instantly access and search through the companies entire email communication, providing results within seconds. Accessible through a web-based discovery portal, legal departments or auditors are now enabled to easily retrieve information so that the IT department is no longer involved in these tasks.

Designed as a cloud-based service, Astaro Mail Archiving doesn’t require the deployment of additional hardware or software. xfinity.tv (Comcast) has released a new iPad App

photo1Do you want more control over your DVR’s in the home? Well Comcast has a new App available on iTunes that allows you to set up your recordings on all of DVRs in your house.

Here’s a brief highlight of this App’s capabilities:

  • Search On Demand and TV Listings
  • Change channels on your TV
  • Schedule your DVR remotely
Remote Tune

You can change the channel on your TV right from your XFINITY TV app. Just find a program you want to watch in TV Listings and tap “Watch on TV” to change your TV’s channel and start watching instantly. You can even tune directly to an On Demand program.

Remote DVR Scheduling

Use the XFINITY TV app to schedule your DVR from wherever you are. Just find a program you want to record from TV Listings and tap “Record.” It will be waiting for you on your DVR when you return home. You’ll never have to miss your favorite shows again.

How to Search

With the XFINITY TV app, it’s easy to navigate through the thousands of TV shows and movies – even those On Demand – that are available to you. Simply tap “Search” at any time and search by title, actor or keyword. You can even filter by genre, network, HD and more.

Download Free

The XFINITY TV app is available for download from the App Store℠ for your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch."

While this application gives you access to programming you DVR remotely it is lacking a few functions that would make it more functional.

First, I would like to have the ability to see what I have on the schedule to be recorded and have the ability to edit those choices.

Second, it would be nice to be able to jump to a specific date, time and/or station.

Third, the ability to create a list of stations that you want to always review would be another nice feature.

Fourth, wouldn’t it be nice to stream the content to the iPad as well? Maybe that is asking too much. But if they checked with your connection, and since you are logging in with your account information it shouldn’t be that much harder than connecting with a PC and streaming that way.

This is the first iteration and you can’t expect the whole world all at once. The program is very responsive and simple to use. Would I recommend downloading this to your iPad or your iPhone. Definitely. This gives you the ability to lock in a TV recording if you happen to forget to program it locally or you can take a look at what movies are playing while you are away that you want to record to watch at a later time.

I will look forward to see what they will come out with in the future versions.

Trendnet’s new 500Mbps powerline Ethernet product.

2010-11-27_1424Ethernet over power lines has always been a part of our arsenal to connect PC’s when we don’t want to run wire. The draw has been that it is relatively slow when compared to the speed you are achieving over CAT5e and CAT6 cabling. It is nice to be running at a full gig between your workstations, servers and other networked devices. What we have seen in the past from powerline Ethernet was always in the 11-14mbps range but Trendnet’s new product promises to get that speed up where we need it to be to handle your Data, VOIP and Video traffic.

Things like Blu-ray players, game consoles, TVs and all sorts of other stuff need a web connection to work a lot of times. The catch for many of us is that not all of the gadgets have WiFi built-in and sometimes WiFi just doesn't cut it when it comes to getting a reliable connection.2010-11-27_1425

Trendnet has unveiled a new powerline networking system that is aimed at folks streaming lots of HD models and other large files across a network. The networking kit promises powerline networking at up to 500Mbps. Each of the adapters has a Gigabit Ethernet port built-in and has 128-bit AES encryption. The system has one button set up and an LED indicator on each adapter for network status.

You are limited to a maximum of 16 adapters (nodes) if you are streaming video. Additional adapters can impact performance. Networked Powerline devices need to be plugged into power outlets that are on the same electrical system. The network signal transmits up to 300 meters.

You will be able to get two kits with the powerline gear. The TPL-401E is a single adapter and will ship on November 29 for $99.99. The TPL-401E2K kit is a pair of the adapters to get you started and will ship on the same day for $179.99. You can add more adapters to your powerline network as needed, but you need a pair to get started.

So what is Microsoft’s Office 365?

2010-11-27_1340Microsoft's Office 365, the next piece of a broader play by Microsoft to bring its suite of Office server tools and collaboration work flows onto the cloud, is expected to launch sometime next year.

The company is already in the stages of testing it with small businesses and has a list of some 60,000 organizations, which are waiting to get access. In the meantime, Microsoft is continuing to fine-tune the product and expand its testing group--both in scale and the size of the companies that are being allowed in.

CNET reports: CNET was lucky enough to get early access to Office 365, which has been designed to work on a number of Web browsers, including Firefox and Safari--though not yet Chrome, which will work when the product is finalized. Office 365 is also cross-platform, so it works with both Macs and PCs. The good news is that in our brief testing, everything worked as advertised. The bad news is that you can't get it right now, and it's still a long ways off from something that lets you every feature out of the Office ecosystem without installing software.

So what is Office 365? This is a service that takes several server based applications and hosts them for you on the internet. These applications include hosted versions of Exchange (Outlook), SharePoint and Lync (replacement for Microsoft’s Communication Server) without having to host these services on your own network and never having to worry about maintenance updates. The service is going to run between $2 and $27 per user per month depending on your company size and which services your subscribe to.

Office 365 is available on a limited testing basis only and has a waiting list of over 40,000 but Microsoft is adding new subscribers daily as they test their server loads and functions. According to CNET they had absolutely no problem with their initial use of the product and they felt the system response was very good.

There is still a heavy reliance on local Office Applications and part of your subscription can include Microsoft Office for your local machine. Otherwise you have to rely on the consumer site for Office Web Apps for accessing Word, Excel and PowerPoint. If you are using Office on your local computer then one of your options with this subscription will be to save your documents to the Team Site (SharePoint) so you can share your files with others or with yourself from other locations.

You no longer need to have Outlook on your local machine in that the interface to the hosted Exchange Server is the new version of Outlook OWA that looks just like the packaged version. It has stronger links back to the Team Site (SharePoint) so that you can open documents into a pop-up browser window right from Outlook. This is quite useful in cases where your local computer doesn’t have Office installed on it. Outlook takes full advantage of keyboard shortcuts which helps you to quickly maneuver through your email.

Lync has some interesting connection to some of Windows Phone 7 and iPhone connections. This is something that I am going to look forward in testing myself to see if it is really useful or not. It provides other features like instant messaging, audio and video conferencing and voice call service. This version is based out of a web browser so it doesn’t have all of the capabilities of the full blown product but I can’t comment on that as of yet since I haven’t used it.

It is nice to have SharePoint on the system so that you can manage its capabilities on a team basis. Between simple list management, communication and file storage this is a great product to enhance how you do things and control workflow in your office.

All in all I would suggest keeping an eye on how this product progresses and when it becomes readily available might be a great addition to your company’s needs. It certainly will be something to look at to see if the pricing can fit within a budget that you can afford for the extra services that you can take advantage of.

Netflix adds unlimited streaming plan; raises prices for DVD plans

2010-11-27_1327Some good news and some bad! Netflix is now offering an unlimited streaming-only subscription plan for those of you who don’t want to deal with DVD’s and the United Postal Service. The bad news is that Netflix is raising its prices on several other plans that are based around DVDs.

The unlimited streaming plan will run $7.99 a month, which puts it right in line with Hulu Plus’ offering. This plan is available right now. As for the price hikes, the 1-DVD and 2-DVDs out at a time plans will rise by $1 while the 3 DVDs-plan will jump $3 to $19.99. This will definitely make the streaming option a lot more attractive to those who have an internet connection that can handle it.

I know that I for one would probably be better suited with the streaming only plan because I don’t turn around the DVDs very often. I have one that I am currently sitting on for over a month and during that time the streaming version  has become available.

EOS Rebel T2i / 550D Firmware Update Version 1.0.9

2010-11-27_1305So we got a Thanksgiving present of a new update for our T2i cameras. This update fixes a phenomenon in which tone jumps become noticeable in some images, depending on the shooting scene, when shooting with the Auto Lighting Optimizer settings (Low / Standard / Strong).

Be sure to follow the directions on determining if you need to install the update and the proper method of doing so on Canon’s site. It is simple and only takes a few minutes to perform the update. You will need to go to the bottom of the page to agree to Canon’s terms before you can do the download. There are separate downloads for Mac and Windows and the link that I provided above is for the Windows version. To select another operating system version of the firmware go to this link and click on the Choose Operating System in the center of the screen. You will then be taken to the proper screen for your download.2010-11-27_1315

I find that in most cases that you will want these updates when they come out. If you don’t feel adventurous then you may want to wait a couple weeks to see if anyone is having any problems with it before doing the installation on your equipment. But typically these updates from Manufacturers are usually a good thing to install.

iPad's big upgrade: The top 10 iOS 4.2 features for business | ZDNet

2010-11-24_1542TechRepublic has published their choices of the top 10 iOS 4.2 Features for iPads used in business.  I have found some of these features as very valuable but I haven’t been able to take advantage of several of them as of yet.

Multitasking: I played with the multitasking some and so far I have found it to be a great boon to my productivity but I sure would have liked two more things added to this function:

  1. 2010-11-24_1543An easy way to close an application when you are through with it and
  2. I would like to have the application continue to run in the background when I jump to another application.

I find it really annoying that I can’t listen to a video without it running in the forefront. Sometimes it is nice to continue listening while you jump to some research or to make notes about what you are listening to.

AirPlay: This could really be a neat app in as TR discusses for presentations. It works with the new Apple TV $99 product and you could hook this up to a projector or large screen TV to give presentations, training or any other kinds of video in your conference room.

2010-11-24_1543_001AirPrint: The list of printers that are capable of taking advantage of this feature are very few at the moment. There are several HP’s working right now but there are several manufacturer’s that seem to be working on this but for now I have to rely on my little Lexmark App to allow me to print at home. It works pretty well out of the utility but it is limited to printing pictures and websites that are brought up within the application. It doesn’t take advantage of the built in functions with iOS 4.2.

Find My iPad is now free. Whoopee!

photoFolders: I have hated having so may screens just as I did on my iPhone but you have to be careful how you group applications because I have found that even though my initial consolidation seemed to make sense at the time, as time goes by you forget sometimes where you put apps that you don’t use very often.

Unified Inbox: This feature makes it easy to quickly look at multiple email account inboxes at one time. This is a real time saver if you have many different mail accounts for different things.

Web Browser Search: This is a nice addition that allows you to find key words on a webpage and is especially useful big full pages.

Quick Controls: By double tapping the Home Button (takes you to the multitasking screen) and swiping left to right on the panel that appears you will get to the the quick controls panel that lets you work with the following functions: play/pause button and forward/back buttons for the iPod app, a volume control slider, a brightness slider, and a new virtual orientation lock setting. The old lock above the volume buttons is now a mute button, which I think is stupid but you go with what Apple gives you and you like it!

The Wireless app distribution and Remote device management functions sound great on paper for Enterprise support of large numbers of iPad Corporate supported units and I will have to see this in use before I can comment further on it. Anyway, take a look at the link listed below to see what TechRepublic has to say about these new features.

TechRepublic Top 10 New iOS 4.2 features:

  • Multitasking

  • AirPlay
  • Wireless app distribution
  • AirPrint
  • Find My iPad
  • Folders
  • Unified inbox
  • Remote device management
  • Web browser search on page
  • New quick controls console

Photoshop CS5-I saw some neat stuff that makes me want to make the jump!

2010-11-20_2155Download this podcast and view it an tell me that you don’t want to upgrade to Photoshop CS5 just for this capability.I saw this on Justin Seeley's Quick Tips for Photoshop preview and they were wild? You can find this on iTunes or ou can go to Justin’s site at: http://www.seeley.tv/psqt/episode-81

What he shows us is how he can use a new function of Adobe Photoshop called Content Aware in different tools that allows you to make some big changes in  your workflow. These new functions give you some capabilities that you just didn’t have before. This is worth some time to see if it is a goof fit for you and if not, well, why not? I know this is driving me to wanting to pull the trigger on purchasing this product.

Guess Who is getting a new Canon T2i?

2010-11-20_2138Yeah, I am excited. Seems like I am just taking baby steps to get to the next camera level. But, you do what you can do and that is all you can do. So, next week, just in time for the holiday season, I’ll have my new toy to play with. I would have liked to take the big leap to the 5D but going from a 10Mp to a 18Mp camera will have its own benefits that I will take advantage of as well as the increased sensitivity of the electronics package. This i s going to be a fun experiment and will be interesting to see how well I do with the winter color coming shortly.

I took advantage of the Canon/Amazon discount to get the standard camera lens outfit at a $50 discount and then added the 50-250mm lens for $5. This is a $200 discount. Then I grabbed the Canon Pro9000 printer for $459 with a $400 rebate coupon deal as well netting me the printer for a measly $59.

October 21st marks the anniversary of Windows 7’s Introduction so how well has it done?

2010-11-20_2117Well the report card shows in excess of 240 Million licenses sold in one year. Is this good? Microsoft points out that this makes this the fastest selling operating system in its history. This is not so surprising with the promises of Vista falling short and with XP getting a little long in the tooth as well. Just a thought. Don’t take me wrong, I love W7 and now after more than a year of working with it you would have to pry it from my proverbial dead hands. But is it surprising that this product is such a success? I don’t think so. It is a lot more polished when you compare it to Vista and the added features over XP really are a great benefit on a daily basis.

Growth seems to be accelerating and that is a good thing. Windows 7 in a home environment integrates all of you systems so easily and in a business environment things are only getting better with Windows Server 2008 R2 which is based on the Windows 7 kernel integrating all of your systems together. When you see tighter and more efficient integration of hardware, operating systems and application software it can only be a better outcome.

New Virus Killing Your Wireless Connection!

Scott CroppedThere is something new out this week that kills off the wireless on a laptop. It can come out in one or two ways. First way is your wireless will not see any networks at all. Second way is the wireless will see the network but cannot either connect or connects and drops the connection every few mins or so.

The only way I can found to get rid of this is to delete the hidden temp in the users hidden local settings folder, and also delete the temp in the windows folder. Make sure you have an updated Malwarebytes and the latest download of Combofix. Boot in to safe mode and run both programs, reboot and see if it works. If your using a 3rd part app to control your wireless say like dells wireless utility you may have to uninstall and reinstall it.

I believe the virus corrupts the Windows Zero wireless config panel upon start up, after removing it and a reboot the config should sort itself out. t does the same with the 3rd parties but in their case they are normally broken until reinstalled. Also make sure you go in to internet options and connection settings and make sure you click detect settings automatically, as the virus will set a fake proxy.

This is a nasty little virus, and the bad thing about it is it will go through network, I had a system with it on this weekend at my house and it spread through my network hitting my laptop and my wife’s.

Hope this will help you out on the road.

    Logitech-Wireless Keyboard-Solar Powered?

2010-11-20_2057Okay, something new. I hate have to put batteries into my wireless devices and her is a device that takes the ambient light around your office setup and uses it to keep your keyboard up and running. Though I am a little late in reporting this… I think that this is a great concept to get one more worry off of my already so full table. To have a keyboard that is wireless and also have no worry  for having to provide it power seems like a God-Send. Thanks Logitetch. Now show me how you are going to do this with a mouse, too!

Instapaper Updates Its Product to include new Sharing Options

2010-11-20_2052Instapaper is one of my key applications that I use to capture articles for websites and RSS feeds for later reading and archival library storage. I am quietly putting together a wonderful library of photographic and photo editing application articles and notes that I am acquiring daily. I don’t know how I would do this without the use of this wonderful program. The great thing about it is the acceptance that it has received in the community and the other support programs that use its API to grab info on the fly for me.

The New released update provides several User Interface improvements and adds new sharing options as well. This new version adds preview text to the list view on the iPhone and iPod Touch similar to the iPad capabilities. If you are not using this application on your mobile devices and your PC you are missing a great tool to add to your arsenal to crate your own personal research library.

Speaking of Evernote, Version 3.4 New Features

I am a active user of both Microsoft’s OneNote program and also the cloud based EverNote program. Why EverNote? Well, we have to look how I work to lead into the why and my need to document my research and meeting notes to be accessible on every device that I possibly can have it on. So on my PC’s I primarily use OneNote to share this information but I don’t have OneNote access to my phone or iPad. Here is where my EverNote account comes into play. Because it is cloud based, it is available to every device that I own that has Internet access. So whatever I put up in this area is available to me where ever I happen to be. Great addition to my productivity. Anyway, EverNote has come out with a new version that has added this list of new features. But on e of the things that really interests me the most is the growth in side applications that are taking advantage of this wonderful application.

    2010-11-20_2035

    New Additions in EverNote 3.4:

    • Select multiple images from your camera roll at once and add them to a single note or make multiple snapshot notes
    • Audio note recording limit increased to 90 minutes, great for lectures and interviews
    • Audio recordings can now be played, paused and replayed from within the note
    • Audio note playback can be controlled via the dock player, headphones or other external controls
    • Send PDFs and text from Safari and Mail directly into Evernote via the “Open In” option
    • 3rd party developers can configure their apps to send PDFs, images and audio into Evernote
    • Print notes directly from Evernote to a network printer
The updates to Evernote are excellent and elevate the service back to the top of note-taking apps if you feel it had slipped at all.  If you don’t have Evernote for your iOS device(s) you can pick it up here and get to  taking notes.

Google Docs editing finally comes to iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices via Google Mobile

2010-11-20_1632If you haven’t downloaded or updated your Google App you may want to do so now if you are a Google Docs user. While I am not, this appears to be a pretty handy addition to your office toolbox of applications that you can use to access documents created and/or stored on your Google Docs site. You can now make changes to your Google Docs from any IOS 3.x or later device as well as from Android devices running Froyo (2.2).

Seems to work well except I had a problem with using the desktop version for Google Docs on an iPad. It errors out. This may be due to the fact that the website is trying to download to a local add in of the Google Docs application. Since this doesn’t exist on Safari on the iPad it can’t do it. I also tried this using the Atomic Browser on the iPad without any success. However, it does work on my iPhone. Maybe the new update of upcoming IOS 4.2 for the iPad will fix this problem. Without the desktop function I don’t really see much use for this application on the iPad and using it on the small screen of my iPhone is not good either but will work in a pinch if I need it to.

For now I will continue to us DocsToGo for my formatted text and for the quick and dirty, I will use Evernote and FastEver XL to work with text on my iPad.
